The government has revoked the Statutory Instrument that prohibited night driving, in a move aimed at facilitating the implementation of the 24-hour economy as approved by Cabinet.
In a media statement by Ministry of Transport and Logistics principal public relations officer Ernest Chanda, the revocation as announced by Transport minister Frank Tayali was with
immediate effect and is part of broader reforms to enhance economic productivity, improve logistics efficiency, and support uninterrupted movement of goods and services across the country.
He argued that the earlier restrictions on night driving, introduced as a road safety measure, had now been overtaken by advancements in technology and the government’s commitment to modernise transport systems.
“The revocation of this Statutory Instrument is a progressive step towards unlocking Zambia’s economic potential. As we transition into a 24-hour economy, it is imperative that our transport and logistics systems operate seamlessly at all times,” read the statement in part. “The Minister emphasized that the Government will increasingly rely on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to enhance road traffic enforcement and management.”
He stated that these would include the deployment of intelligent traffic monitoring systems, digital surveillance, and automated compliance mechanisms to ensure road safety is maintained at all hours.
“With the integration of ICTs in road traffic enforcement, we are confident that we can maintain high safety standards while allowing for greater flexibility and efficiency in transport operations,” he stated. “Hon. TAYALI further urged motorists, transport operators, and the general public to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as the country transitions into this new operational framework.”
Chanda stated that the ministry working with other relevant stakeholders, would continue to strengthen road safety awareness campaigns and enhance infrastructure to support safe night-time travel.
”
The Government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for economic growth, trade facilitation, and improved service delivery through innovative and forward-looking policies,” stated Chanda.
