UPND thugs, dressed in party regalia, this week unleashed violence against an innocent journalist Alphonso Kasongo who was going about discharging his duties.
The fact that Kasongo survived the heavy handed thuggery from the intoxicated thugs was mainly thanks to God, and the members of the public who intervened to save him.
The sad incident happened while Kasongo was covering party activities organised by the local leadership. But in the midst of all that a group of unruly violent thugs clad in ruling party regalia stormed the gathering and caused violent commotion, prompting him to start recording the incident.
Fearful that their thuggery was going to be splashed out on the airwaves for all to see their depressed vileness, the thugs descended on him, unleashing their cold blooded violence on him. Kasongo said the thugs were almost killing me.
Following the very sad incident, there have been statements of condemnation coming from the media and other members of society. But beyond statements, action from the government and the police is what is needed. What would interest the public most would be the arrest of the violent thugs and and a heavy punishment in terms of imprisonment for them to answer for their crimes.
We need to hear an unmistakable statement from the government and the ruling UPND urging the police to pursue this matter to its logical conclusion. And the police must swiftly act by arresting and bringing the thugs to book. And all those in the UPND with information about these thugs must be patriotic enough to report to police the whereabouts of these criminals.
And we urge the government and ruling party not to try to skirt around the matter around vague terms like ‘suspected UPND cadres’, or that they were cadres belonging to another political party who wanted to paint the ruling party in bad light. Actually, from what we have seen in this country, the same should actually incentivise the law enforcement agencies to pursue the criminals with vigour, in the event they insist on the ‘suspected UPND cadres’ claim.
Zambians demand to see justice in this matter. Statements alone will not do.
