Science and Technology Minister Felix Mutati says government is determined to bridge the digital divide in the country.
Officiating at the unveiling of the new iPhone 15 by E Mark Store in Lusaka, Mutati said there is need to not only launch, but also assemble the phone products in the country in order to bridge the digital divide.
“It is about connecting people,” Mutati said, emphasizing that technology helps to connect people. “This is why government launched starlink to help connect people; that is why a few days ago, we added a new innovation to connect the people of Zambia by launching starlink so that we can be able to reach all the people of Zambia wherever they are.”
He commended E Mark Store for complementing government’s effort in connecting people.
Mutati urged E Mark Store and other telephone operators in the country to introduce phone packages to reach all the people of Zambia through pay as you go so that Zambians across the country have access to mobile communication.
“Government want internet to reach everyone but the limiting factor is devices. People can get [purchase] a phone through technology: as they top up their airtime, a portion [of the money could be] going to pay for the device. Let us be innovative,” the minister advised.
And Minister of Tourism Ronald Sikumba encouraged Zambians to use their phone devices to market the country.
Meanwhile, E Mark Store chief executive officer commended his team for putting in their best to grow the business.
“It is not a one man show, but team work. From the time we started scaling our business, a lot of people have said a so many nice things about me. People think am hard working; am smart; am a visionary. I am just a front. There is a wonderful group of people that are behind me,” said Emmanuel Mwanza.
iPhone 15 is the newly launched phone by Apple.
