Zambia We Want (ZWW) secretary general Muhabi Lungu says he believes the decision by Luangeni independent member of parliament and Second Deputy Speaker Moses Moyo to join the UPND has nothing to do with the people.
”I have just read a story that our Deputy Speaker Hon Moyo has defected to the UPND. While I do not know his reasons are, I am inclined to believe that it is not about the people of Lungeni,” Lungu stated. “It is most likely that the majority of our Members of Parliament clearly think just of themselves and their personal ambitions and not the people they represent. They do not care about principles, beliefs, conviction or be or between what is right or wrong.”
Those who have followed the conduct of Moyo and how he has presided over the business of the house will have little difficult understanding that everything pointed to the decision he just made over the weekend.
Credit to Moyo actually because he has done very little all along to disguise his partisanship inclinations. Therefore, his weekend announcement was very much inevitable. Actually, he even delayed a lot in terms of coming out in the open to state the obvious.
While respecting his democratic right to join the political party of his choice, his actions in public office must not escape strict scrutiny, including if he will retain the same parliamentary position after the August general elections.
We have actually seen a lot of defections actually in the recent past, mostly from the PF or independent to the ruling UPND as we head towards the elections. And we are sure we shall see many more surprises – if ever such a term still holds – given how politics in this country are conducted, before the elections. Many more opposition figures will join the ruling UPND, primarily because they feel the ruling party offers them a better chance of continuing to serve as members of parliament or in various other public capacities.
Likewise, we shall see some figures from the ruling party, from especially those who will not be re-adopted, defecting to opposition parties they think will offer them a better chance of continuing in public office.
But like Muhabi said, all this is being done to secure the politicians immediate personal interests first. Actually that is likely the only motivation. Service to the people if at all it exists is very much secondary in the political scheme of things.
People only matter in terms of votes, and in most cases after they have received a few handouts here and there from the politicians seeking to be elected.
This trend will likely continue until the people have learned to place a premium on their vote. The politicians will continue behaving in the same manner, and will continue changing political colours knowing fully well that there is very little accountability demanded of them by the electorates. They know that they will continue to have their way if they can sufficiently mobilise their resource chest to dish out a few handouts here and there during election time.
