Protea employee disappears with over K100,000 he was sent to deposit with ABSA

A 43-year-old Protea Hotel employee of Zani Muone West in Lusaka has been reported to the police for allegedly stealing over K100,000.

In a statement, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that Emmasdale Police Station, through Manda Hill Police Post, received a report on April 8, 2024, at 11:00 hours, from Hagar Mitemba, 32, the manager of Protea Hotels located at Acardes along Great East Road, Lusaka.

 According to Hamoonga, Mitemba reported that Bowas Chigoma, aged 43 an employee of the hotel residing in Zani muone West, was entrusted with $5,240 USD (equivalent to K125,000=00) to deposit into the Protea Hotel account at ABSA Bank, East Park Mall. 

“However, Mr. Chigoma has absconded to an unknown destination without fulfilling his duty. This incident occurred on April 8, 2024, at approximately 09:00 hours, at the Protea Hotel,” read the statement in part. The belief is that on April 8, 2024, at around 08:30 hours, Mr. Chigoma was provided with ZMK 21,395 to be deposited at the bank. Upon his return at 09:00 hours, he was entrusted with $5,240 USD, equivalent to ZMW K125, 000=00, to be deposited, but he failed to return as expected.”

Hamoonga stated that a docket of the case had been opened, and investigations had been initiated by the Emmasdale Police Station. 

He state that as of now, no arrests had been made in connection with this incident.

Hamoonga stated that  Emmasdale Police Station was committed to pursuing this matter diligently and ensuring that justice was served.

He also  urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Chigoma or any relevant details pertaining to this case to go forward and assist police in the investigation.
