‎The electorate and their politicians!

By Daily Revelation Editor

With elections barely four months away, the campaigns are already in full swing. Various candidates seeking to contest for various positions, have already paid the nomination fees, with many preparing to before the closing date.

‎President Hakainde Hichilema is already undertaking tours around the country in the name of launching various public programmes. We are sure he wants to have a headstart on his competitors and shore up the support before the campaigns hit full overdrive.

‎But while he is touring the country under what appears to be the caveat of official presidential programmes, his competitors are also traversing the country. They have all of a sudden become frequent Saturday and Sunday Church goers, visiting one congregation after another in various parts of the country. They suddenly appear to be more committed Christians than the usual Church goers themselves. We hope they will remain as such after the general elections.

‎But beyond being fascinated with the sudden visits of these politicians in their Churches and localities, nationals are urged to focus their attention on the people offering themselves to lead them. They should focus more on the substance of the political players as opposed to their  outward appearances, because those can actually be often deceiving. They should focus on things like the ability of the players and the workability of what they are promising, if any. We say so because in this country, we have become too accustomed to voting for chimwele as opposed to the ability of the people we elect into office to deliver. Just one hit song actually is enough in this country to sway voters towards one particular candidate.

‎But we hope 2026 will mark the year when we begin to change that mindset. We need to be more demanding of the people offering themselves to lead us. What are their policies on Agriculture for instance, to turn the abundant water resources and arable land in this country, for the benefit of Zambians? What are their policies in mining, manufacturing, tourism and energy for instance? What promises are they giving out to Zambians to ensure that the rich Zambian resources benefits first and foremost the Zambian people?

‎Zambians must scrutinise to know who is backing these politicians and the promises they are dishing out? Are there any elements of foreign or narrow special interests behind them, lest we vote for them, and instead of working their socks off from day one, they will instead expend their energies towards repaying the special interests?

‎We all are allowed to support political candidates of our choice, but national patriotism and love for country should supersede all the narrow political, regional and communal ties that we may hold. You see countrymen, political players are supposed to be our servants seeking a mandate from us and not the other way round. It is therefore, our responsibility to demand that these servants work their socks off to please us. We can’t allow party and political divides to separate from demanding what is due to us from these our servants.
