Tighten your belts so that we can take off, Republican Vice-President Mutale Nalumango has told Zambians.
Speaking during the Vice-President’s question and answer session in parliament, Vice-President Nalumango said if a mountain needed to be climbed to achieve the goal, that would be done, saying the interest was to bring the country back to stead.
“Tighten your belt so that we can take off…and then we will land safely,” Vice-President Nalumango said. “We are not a fearful lot. Zambians watch the space, ask us in two to three years from now if you won’t be smiling.”
Vice-President Nalumango said the UPND never promised that they would not borrow but that they would do so prudently.
She questioned the motivation by the previous government to procure debt on the open market with higher interest rates when bilateral loans with lower rates could have been acquired.
The government has entered into a $1.4 billion deal with IMF, which will see a removal of subsidies on fuel and electricity which will eventually lead into increased fuel and electricity prices.
