Vice-President Mutale Nalumango yesterday survived a helicopter crash, along with the seven other people she said she was flying with.
From her own account, the Vice-President said the helicopter was damaged.
We all must indeed be thankful to God that life was spared, with no serious injuries, at least as reported from yesterday’s account.
We believe that there is no upright or sane person that would celebrate the life threatening incident Nalumango and the others found themselves in yesterday.
But it is wise for there to be an inquiry into what transpired, including the safety of the helicopter that almost claimed the life of the Vice-President and the others citizens. Zambians will need to know what really transpired. Was the helicopter safe to fly people in the first place? What was its maintenance record for instance? And by extension, what is the safety of the inventory in the Defence forces inventory? And the findings must be made public because there are many other people that will continue to fly on those planes.
Nalumango was upbeat that she had survived and would continue on her campaign programmes. Like we said, we all give thanks to God for preserving life. But the same God demands us to be wise. Life might have been saved yesterday, but it would be wise to conduct a proper inquiry into the matter so that life is not threatened again tomorrow. We can’t count on today’s fortune for tomorrow’s circumstances. The famous Bemba proverb says beshiba ekolefuma, tabeshiba ekoleya (where you are coming from is known, but where you are going may not be known). Therefore, we must use the experiences of today to better prepare for our tomorrow.
Today we are thankful that the life of the Republican Vice-President and several others souls from that crash are alive. Now let us do a proper inquiry to ensure that such experiences never happen again. If it requires replacing the helicopter and other fleet in our inventory, then let the same be done so that life is not risked again.
