Why is ACC taking forever to investigate those connected to UPND?

By Daily Revelation Editor

Makebi Zulu is wondering why the investigating wings especially the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is always quick to investigate and prosecute corruption cases involving former leaders, while always taking forever to investigate corruption cases they announced or feared to announce against officials connected to the UPND administration.

Makebi is blaming Hakainde Hichilema for this sad scenario especially after he brought the ACC under his wings. There is a feeling that bringing the ACC under his wings is one of the biggest injustices ever to happen in the fight against corruption as he can easily determine which ones should be prosecuted and which ones should not.

Makebi is wondering why the sugilite case in which several UPND officials were arrested and taken to court is so quiet, away from the conscious of majority Zambians. That court matter is being prosecuted in Mansa. He’s also wondering what has happened with the investigations involving former health permanent secretary Dr George Magwende and the probe against the Solicitor General Marshal Muchende. These forever probes not only question the credibility of these institutions but they also put a dent on the people they are investigating.

Some of the people being investigated have already complained and asked the ACC to clear them because they can’t walk with their heads high owing to that tag where people’s minds have been conditioned to conclude that whoever is being investigated by the investigative wings is corrupt.

Makebi also mentioned that there were issues that have been raised against Energy minister Peter Kapala but nothing has happened on that score. It is clear to every reasonable and sensible Zambian that there should be something really seriously happening behind the curtains on why some of these forever investigations will never amount to anything tangible.

It should be clear to all that the claims by Hakainde that he was going to fight corruption past, present and future was nothing but the usual politics politicians play to excite or hoodwink simple minds. The man did not actually mean what he was saying, otherwise people would be seeing several government officials appearing before the courts of law especially with the rampant abuses happening in this administration.

Taxpayers surely deserve to know the status of some of these forever investigations. Where have they reached now? When are the suspects being formerly arrested and charged so that they can be taken to court? If no case was found against them why are they not being cleared? Is the ACC embarrassed to disclose that they have cleared someone they overzealously announced they were investigating and therefore can’t fathom living with that shame of clearing them? These are questions ACC director general Thom Shamakamba and his officials must provide concrete answers for to Zambians. There is simply no way you can conduct investigations forever against people, because in doing so you erode the credibility of your own institution or the standing of the people you are investigating.

Truth and integrity are non-negotiable credentials required for leadership especially those whom God has entrusted to rule. Trust me God is not mocked. As surely as we sow, we shall reap our dues. Corruption definition in zambia translates to that which is committed by an opposition leader and not the ruling party. Actually for zambia that’s the most apt meaning of corruption. Let’s get used to it until the next crop of leaders also rule likewise. Holding our leaders accountable should not have to wait for a next election. This is really taking us backwards as a nation. As voters its time we emulate what the Speaker recently recommended – petition our government through signatures to show our displeasure as citizens.
