‎Kudos to Govt over the healthy $5b foreign reserves

By Daily Revelation Editor

In life it is always unwise to be a cynic. Criticism of the government shall always exist, and those who freak when criticism is levelled against those in government are some of the most unreasonable human beings around.

‎But while criticism is justified and must be encouraged even by those who are in government and their supporters, however, society should be united against cynicism

‎Cynicism is defined as a distrustful, skeptical attitude believing people are motivated by self-interest, greed, or vanity, leading to a jaded, pessimistic view that sincerity or goodness is rare, often stemming from disillusionment with unfulfilled expectations from society or authority.

‎And criticism is the act of analysing and judging the merits or faults of something or someone, involving thoughtful evaluation to identify strengths and weaknesses, aiming for improvement (constructive) or sometimes focusing on disapproval (destructive).

‎The two definitions are self-explanatory. And as the definition goes, society is better off when you have critics who evaluate to identify strengths and weaknesses in something aiming for improvement. On the other side, cynics are eternally negative as they do not see anything positive no matter how good it is.

‎In light of the definitions, we urge the nation to celebrate the historic achievement by the UPND administration over the US$5 billion foreign reserves Zambia is holding, covering five months of import cover. This achievement did not happen in a vacuum as it involved a lot of hard work from those in the UPND administration. Credit must therefore be given to President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for this achievement, given where the country was in terms of reserves when they were taking over office in 2021. The ripple effects owing to the same are huge, including offering the much needed helping hand in ensuring the stability of the Kwacha against other major convertible currencies. It doesn’t need explainining how vital a strong Kwacha is as a stabilising factor when it comes to inflation.

‎The benefits of a stable Kwacha are already being felt in terms of planning and the pricing of goods in this country that is heavily dependent on imports.

‎What Zambians should look forward to and demand from the government is actually to see more of the trickle down effects of the improving fundamentals, especially in the cost of goods and services which are still high and beyond the reach of millions of ordinary Zambians.
