I HAVE A DUTY TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER – IG

By Daily Revelation Reporter

My duty is to maintain law and order, says Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba.

And MMD leader pastor Nevers Mumba said he will not join the chorus that calls every action by the investigative wings as persecution.

And asked on reports that he is being considered for a diplomatic appointment, pastor Mumba argued that he is not aware of anything of that sort.

Asked by Daily Revelation what it was PeP leader Sean Tembo has been in police custody for, Kajoba said there was a statement that the police spokesperson is supposed to issue.

Asked again that there was a feeling especially from the opposition circles that he is a UPND cadre and doing President Hakainde Hichilema’s bidding of arresting his political opponents, Kajoba said he does not do politics.

“I do police work. Me I do police work. I maintain law and order. That’s all. Let’s leave politics to politicians. Me I am a civil servant who is a police officer and doing police work. That’s all. That’s all I can say,” said Kajoba.

Kajoba also said he has not seen the letter from Economic Front (EF) leader giving him seven days within which to tell Zambians how far Police has gone in investigating the alleged Mary Chirwa videos, saying “when I see the letter I think I will comment on it.”

And pastor Mumba said investigative wings exist to maintain law and order and have the power to question any Zambian they suspect to be implicated in one criminal matter or the other.

“So for us we are not going to join the chorus that calls every action or any action by these investigative wings as persecution. However, our eyes are intently on the processes that are being undertaken,” he said.

He said those that have been accused have been brought before the investigative wings to be asked questions and warned and cautioned and even released on bond, saying to call such a process as persecution was limiting the operations of democracy, adding however, that if the problem with Tembo was that he was not being taken to court, it is important that that is done.

Pastor Mumba said many have been questioned by the investigative wings, including himself, saying the issue was to appear before them without any “arrogance and pride” and the feeling that you should never been asked.

Pastor Mumba also commended President Hichilema and his economic team for getting the $1.3 billion IMF relief package, saying obviously nobody celebrates debt, but this was different as the country was receiving an endorsement that the economic plans have received global approval based on transparency and accountability and the international community will therefore do business with Zambia.

Asked on reports that he is being considered for a diplomatic appointment, pastor Mumba said: “No! And I am not aware of any of those rumors. And I don’t think it’s true.”

But asked if he would accept a diplomatic appointment if it came his way, pastor Mumba said he did not know where that was coming from, wondering whether that was on account of him helping the government when called upon, saying whatever he was doing he was doing it on account of him having been a former vice-president, and that therefore a lot of people tend to make so many conclusions when they see such activities.
