Lusaka mayoral aspirant Victor Nyasulu says the coming together of Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu signals hope to millions of Zambians.
In a press statement, Nyasulu stated that the development was significant not merely because of the stature of the “two distinguished
Senior Counsels”, but because it signals hope to millions of Zambians who have grown weary
of fragmented opposition politics at a time when national unity of purpose is urgently required.
“I warmly and unreservedly congratulate Presidential candidate Mr. Brian Mundubile (BM8)
and the youthful firebrand Presidential candidate Mr. Makebi Zulu (MZ8) on what appears to
be a truly momentous and patriotic development for Zambia,” Nyasulu stated. “Just last week, I publicly re-emphasized the urgent need for opposition unity, even using dramatic language to stress the seriousness of the hour—that if necessary, opposition leaders
should metaphorically be ‘locked in a room’ until they put Zambia first and found common cause for the sake of our suffering people.”
Nyasulu stated that he was encouraged to witness what he described as a practical demonstration of the “very spirit of sacrifice, maturity, and statesmanship that many citizens have long desired.”
“From conversations across Lusaka and among many urban dwellers, as well as citizens
particularly from the north-eastern regions of our country, these two leaders have consistently
emerged as serious and compelling voices in Zambia’s political conversation. Their decision
to come together will undoubtedly be viewed by many as a major turning point,” Nyasulu stated. “As Victor Nyasulu for Lusaka Mayor, I wish to state clearly that leadership is ultimately about
putting national interest above ego, ambition, and personal calculation. What Messrs.
Mundubile and Zulu have demonstrated deserves commendation.”
He stated that he was personally grateful to Almighty God for the development, at a time he said many citizens have become cynical about politics, moments such as these restore confidence
that principled decisions can still be made in the national interest.
“Zambia needs courage. Zambia needs maturity. Zambia needs unity. I therefore commend both leaders for this bold and statesmanlike step and urge all other opposition players to draw the appropriate lesson from this development: the Zambian people are bigger than any one individual, party, or political ambition,” stated Nyasulu. “History often remembers those who chose country over self. Today, Brian Mundubile and
Makebi Zulu have made such a choice.”
