Information minister Cornelius Mweetwa says the media are key stakeholders when it comes to sensitising the people on the importance of climate change.

In his World Press Freedom day message, which falls on May 03, on ZNBC TV and Radio, Mweetwa urged the media to help highlight environmental issues affecting the people.

“As we commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom day, we remind ourselves of the fact that we stand on the brink of a climate emergency, in which the need for accurate, impartial and fearless reporting have never been more critical. We call on the media to serve not only as watchdog of our planet but as well as participants in shining a spotlight on environment issues that affect us all and inspiring collective action to safeguard the Earth and future generations,” Mweetwa said. “As you are aware country men, Zambia is not an exception in the devastation caused by climate change with particular reference to this year in which the country has experienced extremely low rainfall, culminating into the worst drought the country ever experienced.”

Mweetwa urged the media in Zambia to prioritise the environment when they are reporting.

“The media is challenged to accord environmental issues key priority in their news coverage and programming,” said Mweetwa.
